Biden's resistance to dropping out is coming from a place of 'delusion': CNN political commentator

CNN political commentator S.E. Cupp said Thursday that Democratic lawmakers were leaking their conversations with President Biden because they feel they can't get through to him about dropping out of the race.

"Democrats are so desperate to get through to Joe Biden and they’re not, that now they're leaking these private conversations as sort of an outside effort to triangulate and really force Joe Biden to acknowledge the realities of the state of his campaign. And unfortunately, I think his resistance does not look like it’s coming from a position of strength but a position of delusion," Cupp said. 

"The fact that everyone is now talking openly about these private efforts is speaking to that delusion and feeling like we can‘t get through to him. He’s not believing the polls. He says that publicly, he doesn‘t believe the polls. He’s not listening to voters, a large percentage of whom are telling him, ‘we don’t believe you can get there.’ He‘s not acknowledging this Trump trifecta of momentum," she continued.

Cupp said Democrats likely don't believe Biden can beat former President Trump in November.

Biden has reportedly gotten defensive with Democrats that have voiced concerns about his candidacy. Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer also reportedly told Biden in a "blunt one-on-one conversation" Saturday it would be best if he "bowed out of the race," according to ABC's Jonathan Karl.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Cailf., a California Senate candidate and a close ally of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, publicly called on the president to drop out of the race on Wednesday. 

Cupp also argued that it was the Republican Party that looked serious while the Democratic Party looked like it was in turmoil.

"The RNC and Republicans and Trump look disciplined and Biden’s campaign looks like a vanity project at this point. It looks unserious. Trump looks serious. We have to acknowledge the wildness of that, but they have stayed on message. They have been unified. The other side has been in chaos and turmoil," she said.

CNN's Kate Bedingfield, who previously worked for Biden as White House communications director, said that if Democrats were to replace the president on the ticket, Vice President Harris should be the nominee. 

"If they are going to make a switch, to me Kamala Harris is the person it would need to be, that it should be. She's been a governing partner to Joe Biden, she has wide support across the Democratic Party," Bedingfield said.

The president's future has been called into question by several prominent Democrats, as well as members of the media. 

"Joe Biden has said he is running for President of the United States. Our campaign is moving forward, drawing a vision and a contrast between that of Project of 2025 and what we've seen for the past three days here in Milwaukee -- the extreme agenda of Republicans -- and that's where our focus is. There are no plans being made to replace President Biden on the ballot," Principal Deputy Campaign Manager Quentin Fulks said during a press conference on Thursday. 

A new AP-NORC survey, which was conducted July 11-15, found that 7 in 10 adults, including 65% of Democrats, say Biden should withdraw and allow his party to select a different nominee.

The same survey found that 57% of adults believe Trump should withdraw from the race and allow his party to name a replacement. But Trump is maintaining support from his party, with 73% of Republicans saying he should stay in the race.

GOP rep says he was assaulted by protester at Republican National Convention; CODEPINK slams 'misogyny'

Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden said on Tuesday that he was assaulted by an anti-war protester at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee — but the protester said she was shoved past by the lawmaker.

Van Orden, R-Wis., said in a statement that he was assaulted by a protester, who he identified as coming from the anti-war group CODEPINK, as he was in line to enter the GOP convention.

"While standing in line to enter an event at the RNC today, I was assaulted by what appeared to be a member of the pro-Hamas group CODEPINK. A nearby police officer witnessed this assault and I understand they have been arrested," he said.

He said that the incident appeared to be an act of political violence and said "I will never tolerate this."

Van Orden raised the recent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

"Republicans have been intimidated and targeted for years including the attempted assassination of President Trump and we will no longer standby and allow lawlessness," he said. "Nothing will change until these people are held accountable."

However, CODEPINK denied Van Orden's version of events, saying that its Palestine campaign organizer was "wrongfully arrested" after Van Orden shoved past her and tried to cut in line.

"While peacefully waiting in line to enter the event, Nour, a visibly Palestinian woman, was intentionally bumped into by this bald, white member of Congress while he tried to shove past her," co-founder Medea Benjamin said. "Despite not reacting to this, Nour was falsely accused of ‘assault’ by a Texas State police officer on the scene and we are told she will be taken to a Milwaukee Police Department. No charges have been filed as of this release. Notably, two other CODEPINK staff members ahead of her in line passed through without any issues, raising concerns of racial profiling."

Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent over 100 law enforcement personnel to Milwaukee to help back security operations at the RNC in MIlwaukie.

Benjamin said the incident is a "microcosm of the misogyny" at the RNC that the only Palestinian in line was allegedly assaulted and later arrested.

"CODEPINK unequivocally states that no one from our organization assaulted anyone. We attended the RNC to deliver a message of peace and disarmament, adhering strictly to non-violent protest methods," the statement said.

Rob Lowe says 'competitive' Tom Cruise knocked him out boxing: 'His eyes just went black'

Rob Lowe recalled the moment he was "completely" knocked out by "Outsiders" co-star Tom Cruise.

Lowe and Cruise first met in 1980 when they were just teens and the "Mission: Impossible" star was living with Emilio Estevez. The 18-year-old actor had just finished filming "Taps," according to Lowe.

The "Wayne's World" star explained he has a lot of "favorite" Cruise moments, but the one from the set of "The Outsiders" has always stuck with him.

"He’s so competitive that we used to box in the hallway of the hotel we were staying at during ‘Outsiders,’" Lowe said during an episode of the "The Rich Eisen Show." "So much testosterone. We’re 18-year-old guys stuck on location. So we would wear headgear, and we’d have mouthpieces in, but we would legitimately spar."

In one particular boxing match, Cruise "completely" knocked out Lowe.

"But I hit him real clean, and I rang his bell, and the next I knew, I woke up – I was coming to, on the floor," Lowe added. "And he, like, completely knocked me out."

"His eyes just went black, but that’s the stuff we did. That’s what guys do. It's like ‘Fight Club.’"

"The Outsiders" starred Lowe and Cruise along with Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio and Diane Lane. Francis Ford Coppola, the movie's director, shared footage from the film's audition process in March.

"42 years ago we cast ‘The Outsiders’ in a unique way," he wrote on Instagram.

"We had all the actors together on a soundstage and would alternate different actors reading for different roles," he continued. "It was interesting because each of them was watching their competition, so while it could’ve been a volatile situation, it turned into a very positive one."

"There emerged the natural respect and sense of colleagueship among them. The result worked beautifully and reminded me of my days as a camp counselor."

The cast commented on the post, thanking Coppola.

"These auditions and this film experience still inform me today. Thank you, Francis (and Susie)," Macchio wrote.

"It was my first time away from home, it was my first movie. I'll never forget it," he said. "It feels like it was four days ago, not 40 years."

Here's what ruthless hackers stole from 110M AT&T customers

In a startling revelation, AT&T announced that it had suffered a significant data breach affecting "nearly all" of its cellular customers, as well as customers of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) using AT&T's wireless network and some landline customers. 

The data that was taken was from May 1 through Oct. 31, 2022, with a small number of additional records from Jan. 2, 2023, which has raised serious concerns about customer privacy and data security.

The compromised data includes records of calls and text messages, along with phone numbers that AT&T or MVNO cellular numbers interacted with during the specified period. For some records, cell site identification numbers were also exposed. 

AT&T emphasized that the breach did not include the content of calls or texts, personal information like Social Security numbers or dates of birth, or specific timestamps of communications.

AT&T disclosed that the data was illegally downloaded from their workspace on a third-party cloud platform. The company has since taken steps to close off the illegal access point and is working with law enforcement to apprehend those responsible. At least one person has reportedly been arrested in connection with the incident.

AT&T plans to notify approximately 110 million current and former customers whose information was involved in the breach. The company has created a website to provide more information and resources for affected customers.

We reached out to AT&T, and a company spokesperson provided us with this statement:

"At this time, we do not believe that the data is publicly available. Our top priority, as always, is our customers. We will provide notice to current and former customers whose information was involved along with resources to help protect their information. We sincerely regret this incident occurred and remain committed to protecting the information in our care."

Interestingly, AT&T, in cooperation with the FBI and the Department of Justice, delayed notifying the public about the breach on two occasions, citing "potential risks to national security and/or public safety." For its part, AT&T explained that the delayed disclosure was a result of its ongoing collaboration with law enforcement during their investigation into the breach. This decision highlights the complex interplay between corporate responsibility, law enforcement, and national security considerations in cybersecurity incidents.

This incident marks the second significant security breach for AT&T in 2024. In March, the company was forced to reset the account passcodes of approximately 7.6 million customers after a cache of customer account information, including encrypted passcodes, was published on a cybercrime forum.

AT&T took this precautionary action after a security researcher warned that the encrypted passcodes could be easily decrypted, potentially compromising customer accounts. This earlier breach affected roughly 70 million past or present customers and reportedly included sensitive information such as Social Security numbers and full names.

This latest incident is part of a larger trend of data breaches targeting cloud platforms. AT&T's breach has been linked to a series of data thefts from Snowflake, a cloud data giant, which has affected several other companies as well. The breach underscores the ongoing challenges in securing sensitive data stored in cloud environments and the need for robust cybersecurity measures.

As investigations continue and more details emerge, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threats to data security in our increasingly connected world. It also raises questions about the adequacy of current data protection practices and the need for stronger regulations to safeguard consumer information.

Police officer clinging to speeding car shoots fleeing suspect dead, with terrified child in passenger seat

Wild bodycam footage has been released showing the moment a police officer, clinging to a speeding car, shoots a fleeing suspect dead while a terrified child screams in the passenger seat.

The shocking video, released by the Buffalo Police Department in New York on Thursday, captured Officer Ronald Ammerman pulling over 25-year-old Dae’von Roberts for speeding just after midnight Wednesday on Kingston Avenue before the suspect hit the gas in a desperate attempt to getaway from law enforcement.

Ammerman is seen clinging onto the car for dear life, pleading with Roberts to stop, saying, "You’re gonna kill me, bro," as a 6-year-old boy screams in horror.

As the car speeds away for about 20 seconds, Ammerman fires off several shots as they both tumble to the ground. 

"Shots fired! There’s a kid in the car still. He tried killing me," Ammerman shouts into his radio.

Ammerman then rushes over to check on the child, who was uninjured, and grabs hold of him until back up arrives. 

Roberts was confirmed dead at a local hospital. A gun was later found inside the vehicle, police said.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said he backed Ammerman’s actions to defend himself from imminent danger. 

"I believe that is a justified use of force that occurred the other night," Gramaglia said at a press briefing. "When you take into account the fact that the officer found himself in a grave risk of serious physical injury or death, the use of that level of force is justified by law and I do believe that that is a justified use of force in this case."

"These situations, they don’t evolve in a classroom, they don’t evolve in a training facility." Gramaglia said. "This is real life, there’s not a lot of control the way some of these situations go down. We can train for various situations, but when it happens in real life, when there are actual situations, they always happen differently than what they do in a training facility."

Gramaglia said Ammerman and another officer had acted in a professional and jovial manner during the stop, which lasted about nine minutes before Roberts tried to flee.

At the beginning of the video, Ammerman approaches the driver’s side of the car and tells Roberts he is being pulled over for excessive speed and for having tinted windows.

Ammerman asks Roberts to pull down the rear tinted window, which he does, revealing a child's car seat and a 6-year-old boy in the front passenger seat without a seat belt on. Roberts refers to the child as his "little cousin" and "his nephew" and says he is on the way to dropping him home. 

Ammerman then asks Roberts to provide identification, to which he agrees, showing him an out-of-state ID on his phone. Roberts tells Ammerman he is from Georgia and was driving his sister’s vehicle.

However, after checking the ID, Ammerman found the ID was invalid and that Roberts did not have a license in either state.

Ammerman, who has been with the department for seven and a half years, then told Roberts that police would do a different search for his name before the officer appeared to reach into the car and open the door.

That was when Roberts put his foot down and sped off – with Ammerman anxiously clinging onto the door. 

In April, Roberts was charged in relation to an alleged shots-fired incident at a memorial for his half-brother Jaylen Griffin, whose body was found at a South Buffalo home in April after he went missing in August 2020, WIVB News 4 reports.

Roberts was indicted in June and was released under supervision at that time, the outlet reports.

Meanwhile, Ammerman and the other officer on scene, Officer Jonathan Crawford, have both been placed on administrative leave, in line with department policy, Gramaglia said. 

"They’re gonna need time to process this," Gramaglia said. "You can’t just come back to work the day after being involved in a situation like that."

‘Miracle’ dog found alive in underground Virginia cave

A group of cavers in Virginia made a miraculous discovery on Sunday while exploring an underground cave littered with animal skulls and bones – a dog that was still alive.

Dave Jackson and Jesse Rochette, of Colorado-based educational cave simulator company CaveSim, told The Associated Press that they were exploring Giant Caverns with a local couple in the town of Narrows in Giles County when the first member started down the cave and spotted the lone dog.

"He said, ‘Whoa! There’s a dog down here!’" Rochette said. "And I asked if it was alive and he said ‘Yes!'"

Rochette said he rappelled 40 to 50 feet down into the funnel-shaped cave with a piece of salami for the dog.

"She instantly came over and sucked up the salami and she loved that," Rochette told the outlet.

The exploratory outing quickly turned into a rescue mission. The group wrapped the shivering dog in space blankets, foam pads and the hood from an old jacket they found in the cave, he said. 

Jackson said they always carry some rescue gear on outings and used what they had to improvise a way to lift the dog out of the cave. A tarp and webbing became a dog harness rigged up into a pulley system to haul out the dog strapped to Rochette.

"As the two of us cleared the edge of the pit and made it to fresh air, she instantly perked up," Rochette said. "She lifted her head up and started sniffing the air."

The rescue took about three hours, the cavers said.

The property owner said he did not recognize the dog, prompting Rochette and Jackson to take the pup to a veterinary hospital. She was then taken to the Giles County Animal Shelter.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the shelter called the dog "a living miracle." 

"Yesterday, we received a call about a dog who had fallen into a cave in Narrows," the shelter said. "To be honest, we didn’t know what the next hours or even minutes would look like."

The dog, who Rochette said was dubbed SPAR-C, an acronym for small party assisted rescue with a C added for canine, had no broken bones, according to the shelter.

While she couldn't use her back legs well without assistance, the shelter said it expected her to be up and moving within days with medication, rest and good nutrition.

On Wednesday, the shelter posted an update saying Sparsy was up and moving, and her medical expenses have been covered. The shelter was still seeking her owner, but said that if she continued healing at this pace, she would be ready for a new home soon.

Cowboys' Dak Prescott downplays concerns about foot after walking boot pic emerges

Dak Prescott raised eyebrows among Dallas Cowboys fans last week when he was seen in a walking boot around his ankle with only months to go before Week 1 of the 2024 season.

With Prescott only under contract for one more season, the national spotlight is certainly going to be on him no matter what he is doing. Prescott talked to reporters on Tuesday and downplayed the boot, saying he was not injured and that his ankle was just sore.

"Honestly, I'm getting older. It's the same ankle that I snapped and had a nasty surgery on four years ago," he said, via The Athletic. "Couple of hard days of training and, you know, you get a little sore, and you're going on a fishing trip, and you want to protect it and make sure that things don't get worse. 

"Literally, it's absolutely nothing. People are reaching, trying to make things that they aren't. I'm getting older. Have to take care of my body. Have to be smart. If I can take precautions and lessening something by putting on a boot, I'm gonna do it. So, sorry that it caused such a whirlwind."

Prescott is coming off of an MVP-caliber season in 2023 in which he led the NFL in touchdown passes (36) and finished with 4,516 passing yards.

However, concerns have been expressed over whether the Cowboys will re-sign Prescott to a long-term deal. The Prescott negotiations are just one of the things Dallas has on its to-do list. CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons extensions are also on the list.

Prescott said there had been conversations about an extension and expressed optimism something would get done, but he will leave all of that to his agent.
