Mamdani takes aim at Trump's immigration policies in fiery Staten Island speech: 'We are fighting to keep NYC a sanctuary city'

New York City's Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani, brought his anti-Trump campaign swing to Staten Island on Wednesday, blasting President Donald Trump's signature immigration reform agenda.

Trump was once again front-and-center in the race for Gracie Mansion on Wednesday as Mamdani continued his "Five Boroughs Against Trump" tour at the Istanbul Bay Authentic Mediterranean Restaurant on Staten Island.

"As we gather here on an island, where nearly 1 in 4 were born outside of this country, an island where 30% of its residents speak a language other than English, it's an island that we know is not immune from this horrific crackdown. We are seeing from the Trump administration. We are seeing it and feeling it," Mamdani said. "And we know that it has nothing to do with safety. It has to do with punishment."

While Trump campaigned for president last year on securing the border and deporting illegal immigrants, Mamdani is campaigning for mayor this year on protecting New York immigrant communities amid Trump's deportation rollout.

Joined by Staten Island District Staten Island District Leader, Jasmine Robinson, Immigration Rights Activist, Yesenia Matas, and President of the Staten Island Democratic Association, Ali Ansari, Mamdani focused Wednesday's event on Trump’s "horrific attacks on New York City’s immigrant communities" in which he continues to "rip New Yorkers off the street without due process."

MAMDANI ZINGS CUOMO IN RENT-STABILIZED HOUSING SPAT DURING ANTI-TRUMP TOUR STOP

"It is not enough to fight against authoritarianism. What are you also fighting for? We are fighting to keep this city a sanctuary city," he said.

Mamdani said earlier this month that New York City and the United States are facing a "dark moment." He then called the Trump administration an "authoritarian government" and slammed ICE for "abduct[ing]" immigrants."

According to Mamdani's campaign website, he is committed to "Trump-proofing NYC," by removing ICE from "all City facilities" and strengthening sanctuary city laws.

ZOHRAN MAMDANI LAUNCHES ANTI-TRUMP TOUR ACROSS FIVE BOROUGHS IN NEW YORK CITY

Resistance to Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration dominated headlines during New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, in which Mamdani handily won in June.

Primary contender and New York City Comptroller Brad Lander—whom Mamdani cross-endorsed and campaigned with in the primary—was arrested by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents in June after being accused of assaulting a federal officer as he tried to escort a migrant from their federal immigration court hearing.

While Lander ultimately faced no charges, the incident catapulted Trump's illegal immigration crackdown onto the New York City campaign trail.

After being detained for several hours, Lander joined fellow primary candidates outside 26 Federal Plaza, an immigration facility in Manhattan, as Mamdani called the incident "fascism."

It was one such instance of elected officials being detained by federal immigration officials as they protested Trump's deportations, including Newark mayor Ras Baraka in neighboring New Jersey.

Sen. Alex Padilla of California was also forcibly removed and handcuffed by federal agents earlier this year when he shouted questions about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids at DHS Secretary Kristi Noem during a press conference.

Protests rejecting ICE have erupted across the country this year, particularly in Los Angeles, where protests delved into riots, leading Trump to authorize the National Guard without Gov. Gavin Newsom's request – the first time in 60 years.

During incumbent Mayor Eric Adams' tenure, New York City became an epicenter of the migrant crisis as President Joe Biden's administration lifted COVID-era Title 42 expulsions and Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, began sending busloads of migrants to New York City from his border state.

As the situation unfolded, Adams began speaking out against Biden's immigration policies, calling New York City's migrant crisis a state of emergency

When Mamdani declared victory in the Democratic primary, he described his vision for New York City’s future as a place "where the mayor will use their power to reject Donald Trump's fascism, to stop mass ICE agents from deporting our neighbors and to govern our city as a model for the Democratic Party."

Meanwhile, Adams built a reputation during his tenure for challenging Biden's immigration policies while vowing to coordinate with Trump's illegal immigration crackdown, including working alongside Trump's border czar, Tom Homan.

Adams has also cozied up to Trump since he was elected in November, visiting both Mar-a-Lago and the White House. Trump's Justice Department dropped bribery, wire fraud and conspiracy charges against Adams earlier this year.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, D-N.Y., weighed removing Adams from office following a slew of City Hall resignations after Adams' case was dropped.

Adams and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo are both running as independent candidates in New York City's mayoral race, and Curtis Sliwa is the Republican nominee. The election is on Nov. 4.

President Trump shakes up Hollywood with revamped Kennedy Center awards list

The Kennedy Center Honors are heating up this year — and Hollywood celebrities are at the heart of the buzz.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced the stars set to be honored at the highly anticipated ceremony in December.

The honorees this year are country legend George Strait, Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone, rock band KISS, English actor Michael Crawford and iconic singer Gloria Gaynor, known for her hits, including "I Will Surive" and "The Eye of the Tiger."

TRUMP AND MELANIA TO HEADLINE POWER-PLAYER PACKED KENNEDY CENTER OPENING NIGHT

Trump, now chairman of the Kennedy Center, ramps up efforts to reshape the honors program — pushing for a glitzier, star-studded celebration.

"The 48th Kennedy Center Honorees are outstanding people, incredible, we can't wait… in a few short months since I became chairman of the board, the Kennedy Center, we've completely reversed the decline of this cherished national institution," he said in his speech.

When reporters asked Trump how involved he was in selecting the 2025 honorees, he didn’t hold back.

"I was about 98% involved… they all came through me," he said.

Trump explained he personally greenlit each honoree, and made it known that some didn’t make the cut.

"I turned down plenty, they were too woke… I had a couple of wokesters. No, we have great people. This is very different than it used to be."

While taking aim at the state of Hollywood awards shows, Trump didn’t miss the chance to swipe at the Oscars.

"Look at the Academy Awards — it gets lousy ratings now, it’s all woke. All they do is talk about how much they hate Trump, but nobody likes that. They don’t watch anymore..."

Trump ended his "very long answer" by saying he "was very involved" in the selection of the Kennedy Center Honorees.

Fans hoping to check out the Kennedy Center website Wednesday afternoon were met with an unexpected message: "You are currently in a temporary waiting room."

After President Trump revealed the blockbuster list of Kennedy Center Honorees, the Center’s official website was flooded.

"We are experiencing high traffic. You are currently in a temporary waiting room to enter the Kennedy Center website."

The waiting room page also explained that the feature was "in place to manage traffic," and users would be redirected to the main site as demand eased.

At the time of publication, the number of users "in line ahead of you" was listed at more than 300.

HOUSE REPUBLICAN APPROVE RENAMING THE KENNEDY CENTER OPERA HOUSE AFTER MELANIA TRUMP

The president previously told Fox News Digital, "The Kennedy Center is coming back. It was not properly taken care of and we are taking it back and we are going to turn it back into something great."

Sources told Fox News Digital that the president is committed to revitalizing the Kennedy Center, with some suggesting it should eventually be renamed "the Trump–Kennedy Center."

The Kennedy Center has two affiliates — the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera. The new leadership team is currently working on business plans with its affiliates to ensure the Kennedy Center has larger endowments and "greater sustainability."

Earlier this year, on February 12, Trump appointed himself as chairman of the Kennedy Center and fired multiple board members.

At the time, he said that he and then-chair David Rubenstein "do not share [the same] Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture," according to the announcement on Truth Social.

"Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP," Trump wrote in the post.

The opera house in the Kennedy Center is the second-largest theater in the center, with 2,347 seats.

The opera house also serves as the site for the annual Kennedy Center Honors, the nation's highest award for lifetime achievement in the arts.

Popular weight-loss drugs linked to sudden vision loss, research suggests

New research has discovered certain weight-loss medications could be associated with an increased risk of serious eye conditions, and even vision loss.

Two studies, published in JAMA, analyzed how semaglutide and tirzepatide — which include popular drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound — impacted eye health in Americans with type 2 diabetes over a two-year period.

One study found a modest risk of developing non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAOIN) – a rare eye condition that can lead to sudden vision loss due to lack of blood flow – in association with semaglutide and tirzepatide.

POPULAR WEIGHT-LOSS MEDICATION COULD RELIEVE PAINFUL ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS, DOCTORS REPORT

Out of more than 159,000 study participants with type 2 diabetes, 35 developed NAION, compared to 19 people in the comparison group.

The Ohio-based researchers also noted an increased risk of developing "other optic nerve disorders," identified in 93 patients.

Although the second study did not observe a "statistically significant difference" in NAION in GLP-1 drug users, there was a small increase in diabetic retinopathy, an eye disease that can damage the retina.

DIABETIC PATIENTS TAKING GLP-1S MAY FACE INCREASED RISK OF EYE DISEASE, STUDY SUGGESTS

While individuals with type 2 diabetes on GLP-1s showed a modestly increased risk of diabetic retinopathy, the researchers concluded that fewer patients experienced sight-threatening complications from the disease.

"These findings suggest that all patients with type 2 diabetes treated with GLP-1 RAs, regardless of preexisting diabetic retinopathy, should be regularly screened and monitored for potential complications," the study authors concluded.

Sue Decotiis, M.D., a medical weight loss doctor in New York City, said she believes more studies are required to confirm the association between these drugs and vision loss, as these studies report some conflicting results.

"NAION is a rare condition of the optic nerve that, although serious, has not really been shown to be increased by these studies," Decotiis, who was not involved in the research, told Fox News Digital. "We need more studies for certain."

Diabetic patients already face a high incidence of eye disease related to blood flow and nerve damage, the expert noted.

"Eye complications are often directly related to the degree or lack thereof of diabetes control."

In most cases, GLP-1 drugs reduce the severity of type 2 diabetes, therefore reducing the incidence of eye diseases, Decotiis noted.

These drugs have also been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, like hypertension, and to improve circulation, which can improve eye health.

For diabetics who are starting a GLP-1, Decotiis recommends having an exam done by an ophthalmologist and scheduling follow-up exams throughout treatment.

"We should take precaution with methodical ophthalmic care for diabetics on these drugs," Decotiis said. "However, let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water."

Novo Nordisk, maker of Ozempic and Wegovy, provided the following statement when contacted by Fox News Digital.

"Patient safety is a top priority for Novo Nordisk, and we take all reports about adverse events from the use of our medicines very seriously. NAION is a very rare eye disease, and it is not an adverse drug reaction for the marketed formulations of semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy) as per the approved labels in the U.S."

"Novo Nordisk, on its part, has conducted an analysis across randomized controlled clinical trials with GLP-1 receptor agonists, including a blinded ophthalmologist evaluation to confirm NAION diagnoses. Our current assessment is that these data do not suggest a causal relationship between GLP-1 RA use and NAION events."

Israeli NGO works behind the scenes to coordinate aid to Gazan civilians

An Israeli nongovernmental organization is working behind the scenes to provide a critical link between the Israeli military and international organizations with one goal in mind: Get humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians.

"We really became this informal connector and facilitator between the Israeli authorities and the humanitarian community," IsraAID CEO Yotam Polizer said.

IsraAID has worked in 64 countries and is currently the largest humanitarian organization based out of Israel

UNICEF OFFICIAL SAYS GAZA MALNUTRITION REACHES 'FAMINE LEVELS' AS HUMANITARIAN AID TRICKLES IN

Polizer says there is broad consensus now that a concerning humanitarian level was reached in Gaza with pockets of malnutrition across the strip. He notes that it isn’t only food that is needed by the civilian population, but also medicine, water and nutritional provisions.

"When we reach severe malnutrition levels, we know that just rice and flour is not going to solve the problem," Polizer added. "We need nutritional supplements, we need people to get protein."

ISRAEL SECURITY CABINET APPROVES PLAN TO OCCUPY GAZA CITY

For nearly five months, there was no consistent flow of aid. That has changed in recent weeks with thousands of trucks being distributed along with airdrops of supplies to civilians. Recently, the entry of commercial trucks was partially approved.

"The declared policy of Israel for two and a half months after the ceasefire collapsed was that nothing comes in," Polizer said. "That was the policy because the plan was to pressure Hamas."

The IsraAID CEO says the focus must be on saving lives, not on playing the "blame game." He urges the United Nations, the Israel Defense Forces, the  Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and all humanitarian organizations to work together and find solutions.

"As a humanitarian organization, the concept of ‘do no harm’ is really our Bible," Polizer added.

A few months after the war started, IsraAID started to receive requests from global humanitarian organizations they had worked with in Afghanistan and Ukraine, asking for help to facilitate aid deliveries to Gaza.

These groups had issues with customs clearance and approval from the Israeli military to deliver supplies to Palestinians in Gaza. These were problems IsraAID could help solve.

Despite the political and cultural differences, Polizer said the Jewish community of the United States is stepping up to donate and support finding solutions for the hunger crisis in Gaza.

"You can support the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but it does not mean you are anti-Israel," he concluded.

Venezuela human rights hit new low as US puts $50M bounty on Maduro's head: State Department

FIRST ON FOX: The U.S. State Department’s annual human rights report delivered a grim assessment of conditions in Venezuela, declaring that human rights have fallen to a new low following reports of widespread abuses and state-sanctioned repression, particularly after the July 2024 presidential election when Nicolás Maduro clung to power.

"The human rights situation in Venezuela significantly worsened," the report reads. "Throughout the year, and particularly after the July 28 [2024] presidential election, Nicolás Maduro and his representatives engaged in serious human rights abuses, reaching a new milestone in the degradation of the rule of law" after the election, according to the U.N. Independent International fact-finding mission on the country in September.

According to the most recent State Department report, credible evidence indicates a dramatic escalation in arbitrary or unlawful killings, disappearances, torture and harsh prison conditions. NGOs and U.N. observers documented extensive restrictions on freedom of expression, with journalists and human rights defenders facing arrests, harassment and censorship. The judiciary remained deeply compromised — unable or unwilling to hold perpetrators accountable for abuses.

AG BONDI OFFERS $50M FOR ARREST OF VENEZUELAN PRESIDENT NICOLÁS MADURO

The report noted that the United Nations International Fact Finding Mission stated at least 25 people were killed in the first days following the July 2024 elections, including two children.

Pro-Maduro leaders "harassed and intimidated privately-owned and democratic opposition-oriented television stations, media outlets, and journalists" through threats, property seizures and prosecutions.

The sweeping report, which will go public Tuesday afternoon, also calls out Brazil and South America for human rights abuses.

In a parallel diplomatic maneuver, the U.S. Department of Justice, backed by the State Department, significantly increased the reward for Maduro’s capture from $25 million to $50 million. Attorney General Pam Bondi accused Maduro of leading one of the world’s most notorious narco-trafficking operations, including associations with the Tren de Aragua, Sinaloa cartel and the infamous Cartel of the Suns. The Drug Enforcement Administration has reportedly seized 30 tons of cocaine linked to Maduro and his allies, with nearly seven tons directly tied to him.

US ACCUSES VENEZUELAN REGIME OF NARCO-TERRORISM OVER ALLIANCES WITH TREN DE ARAGUA, SINALOA CARTEL

This nullified the previous reward levels — $15 million initially set during Trump’s first term, later raised to $25 million under the Biden administration. Venezuela’s foreign ministry dismissed the bounty as a "political propaganda operation."

The State Department report highlights an alarming absence of credible efforts by Venezuelan authorities to investigate or prosecute those responsible for human rights violations. Security forces, including the military, police, and colectivos — pro-Maduro armed groups — were repeatedly implicated in abuses, yet the justice system remained ineffective, allowing a culture of impunity to flourish.

Maduro was indicted in Manhattan court in 2020, during the first Trump administration, on narco-terrorism charges.

The dictatorial Venezuelan leader held onto power after the 2024 presidential election where the U.S. and much of Europe recognized his opposition as Venezuela’s duly elected president.

Trump and Newsom fight over National Guard heads to trial in California

The fight between President Donald Trump and Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom over the National Guard's presence in California is coming to a head on Monday in the start of a three-day trial.

Government attorneys are set to argue that Trump had legal authority to deploy roughly 4,000 National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles in June to assist with anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests and riots.

While most of the National Guard members have since been demobilized, the trial could set the stage for more fights across the country as Trump federalizes guard members in Washington, D.C., and threatens to do so elsewhere in response to high crime rates in blue cities.

Judge Charles Breyer, a Clinton appointee and brother of retired liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, is presiding over the case.

TRUMP AND NEWSOM ON COLLISION COURSE AS FIGHT OVER NATIONAL GUARD INTENSIFIES IN COURT

Breyer previously granted a temporary restraining order in favor of Newsom, saying Trump's decision to mobilize the National Guard was illegal because it infringed on California's authority. One of the conditions required under the law Trump cited to federalize the National Guard is that a rebellion must be underway, and Breyer said the riots in California fell far short of that scenario.

But Breyer's decision was quickly reversed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. A three-judge panel for the appellate court unanimously found that the courts have limited ability to review whether a president has properly invoked the law to federalize the National Guard.

"We are persuaded that, under longstanding precedent interpreting the statutory predecessor to §12406, our review of that decision must be highly deferential," the panel wrote. "Affording the President that deference, we conclude that it is likely that the President lawfully exercised his statutory authority under §12406(3), which authorizes federalization of the National Guard when ‘the President is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States.’"

The panel paused Breyer's initial order indefinitely, but Monday's trial is the next step in the court process as the judge weighs the merits of the case.

While little is left on the ground in California for the judge to resolve – Newsom recently announced that about 300 of Trump's deployed National Guard members remain active in the state – legal questions surrounding Trump's actions persist.

As part of the trial, Breyer will examine the 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act, which bars the military from being used for civil matters. Newsom has argued Trump violated that law and plans to call military officials as witnesses during the trial to testify about the directions the National Guard and a few hundred Marines received.

Newsom has said they were illegally engaged in law enforcement activities, while government attorneys argue they were protecting federal personnel and federal properties.

APPEALS COURT APPEARS SKEPTICAL OF NEWSOM'S CLAIM THAT TRUMP ILLEGALLY DEPLOYED NATIONAL GUARD

While Newsom also argued that Trump's unusual decision to bring the National Guard into a state without the governor's consent was illegal and required the governor's permission, the three-judge panel has already leaned in favor of Trump on that point.

The panel found that while the law's language, which states that Trump must go "through" the governor, could mean the president committed a "procedural" violation, it did not warrant restricting Trump's use of the military.

Newsom has claimed more broadly that militarizing California was unnecessary and caused the unrest in Los Angeles to intensify.

State and local law enforcement officers made about seven riot-related arrests prior to Trump's announcement about the National Guard on June 7, but they made about a thousand arrests during the subsequent 10 days, California attorneys said in court filings.

An ICE official said in an affidavit that National Guard members were "essential" to providing reinforcements around the 300 North Los Angeles Federal Building, which was the site of protests during the controversial immigration raids.

"Prior to the National Guard's deployment, rioters and protestors assaulted federal, state, and local law enforcement officers with rocks, fireworks, and other objects. They also damaged federal property by spray painting death threats to federal law enforcement officers," the ICE official wrote.

Unauthorized North Carolina mine allegedly seizing on Hurricane Helene devastation, court battle imminent

Residents in Poplar, North Carolina, are fed up with an allegedly illegal mining operation they say has been polluting the riverbed and sending thick dust into the air for nearly a year as the mountain community still rebuilds from Hurricane Helene.

Outraged Western North Carolinians in the tight-knit community are traveling to Boone on Monday where a court hearing will determine whether the mine operated by Horizon 30, LLC, can be shut down or face civil or criminal penalties.

On Friday, the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) announced that it had determined the mining operation at Carter Quarry in Mitchell County was unauthorized and in violation of state mining laws.

The North Carolina Justice Department is seeking a criminal injunction. State officials say the operation has continued along the Nolichucky River for months despite Horizon 30 repeatedly being warned that it lacks proper permitting.

VOLUNTEERS HELP REBUILD NORTH CAROLINA HOMES 10 MONTHS AFTER HURRICANE HELENE

"This mine is so detrimental to the area," Tessa Sharp, who lives on a nearby homestead with her Navy veteran husband, Leo Sharp, told Fox News Digital.

Residents who spoke to Fox News Digital made a contrast between the mine operated by Horizon 30 and another nearby in Spruce Pine operated by Sibelco North America Inc.

Sibelco, residents said, has established infrastructure to mine for quartz, employs locally and contributes to the local economy. The one by Horizon 30 descended on the area after Helene.

"They're trying to see what they can get away with so that they can take advantage of an area that's still recovering after Helene," Tessa Sharp said, arguing the mine was benefitting from slowed bureaucratic checks and balances. "If it is something that's feasible for them to get in and make their money, what's to stop them from going up to another neighbor's property and doing this? They know it's going to take, at this point, almost a year for anything legal to come about."

Tessa and Leo Sharp said all but one of their 14 rabbits have died since the mining operation began in December. They attribute the deaths to respiratory issues from the thick dust in the air.

The couple, who've operated a homestead with turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese and quail in the area for about three years, said high floodwaters that swept in during Helene damaged their home's foundation, separating their bedroom from the rest of the house. Amid the initial storm, they rushed to evacuate their livestock to the pig pen of their barn on higher ground.

They said they lived in a tent on the property in the intal aftermath and had been "couch-surfing" with family nearby for more than 10 months before recently moving back into the home.

"This is not something that we all were planning on dealing with while we're in the process of rebuilding," Leo Sharp told Fox News Digital. "This is a community that's been hurt, and we don't need to be hurt anymore than we already have. And the fact that we're sitting here having to deal with this while we don't even have our bedroom back is unbelievable, and you know, it just needs to stop. It needs to stop, and it needs to go away."

Cody Johnson, an Army veteran who grew up in the mountain community, told Fox News Digital that "massive plumes" of silica dust can be spotted over the treeline by the entrance to the mine – next to a property where several children live.

NORTH CAROLINA TOWN DESTROYED BY HURRICANE HELENE HOPING TO WELCOME TOURISTS BACK BY MIDSUMMER

He accused Horizon 30 of coming into the area "under the guise of emergency protocols" enacted to rebuild a section of the railroad destroyed by the hurricane.

"Get out of North Carolina. We don't want you here," Johnson said, addressing Horizon 30 directly. "You came in under the guise of emergency protocols, trying to fool people – unethical."

Horizon 30, LLC is based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, according to its registration records with the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State and the Pennsylvania Department of State.

As the permitting process stalled earlier this year, Horizon 30 CFO Sean Chipman penned a letter to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in May.

"H30 relies upon the emergency permits, authorizations, waivers and other applicable allowances for services in support of the Emergency Railway Repairs and also the Executive Orders of the President of the United States of America, including those in support of the America First initiative and energy independence, as well as prior and concurrent emergency response directives," Chipman wrote at the time.

Chipman argued that the mining application was made "in conjunction with some of the leading professionals in the mining industry" and the Army Corps of Engineers had conducted a review. In the letter, he said the company took "corrective measures" to meet the department's requirements and "wishes to continue to have a good and productive relationship with your Department and the State."

Attempts to reach Horizon 30 for comment were unsuccessful.

Residents said the company has not employed locals and license plates at the Poplar site are from places including Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky and Arizona.

Since the mining operation began in December, Tessa Sharp said the DEQ has relayed to the community that "other than serving cease and desist and sending these cases to the DOJ and Supreme Court, there's nothing that we can do to stop them."

"As a landowner, I think that is really concerning for North Carolina residents," Tessa Sharp said.

The North Carolina Division of Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources (DEMLR) told Fox News Digital that Horizon 30 has been operating the mining site in Poplar since December without the required state permit despite multiple warnings and on-site inspections. Over several months, DEMLR said it issued multiple formal regulatory requirement notices and violation notices directing the company to either stop operations or obtain a valid mining permit.

Inspections confirmed the expansion of unpermitted mining activity, prompting repeated enforcement actions. While Horizon 30 has submitted parts of a permit application, DEMLR said the department has not yet approved it due to incomplete information, and the company remains out of compliance with the Mining Act.

Johnson, who lives on about 80 acres, described how dead birds and other wildlife have been discovered in the area since the mining operation began.

Leo Sharp shared drone footage with Fox News Digital showing excavators and other heavy machinery continuing to operate at the site earlier this month.

State labor department records show Horizon 30 submitted a mining permit application, which is marked as incomplete and as pending review.

The state Labor Department said Friday that the illegal mining operation was discovered after the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration requested that the NCDOL provide miner safety training at the site. During that visit, a state Labor Department official "identified multiple irregularities and immediately questioned whether the site had the required state environmental permit," according to the department. The company then failed to produce the necessary documentation.

"This is exactly why I’ve made it a priority to support and empower our field staff," state Labor Commissioner Luke Farley said in a statement on Friday. "Their experience, judgment, and vigilance are critical to keeping workers safe and enforcing the law. If our staff hadn’t gone above and beyond their duty to protect workers, this illegal operation could have continued unnoticed – putting lives at risk and undermining public trust in our regulatory system."

AOC campaign denies link to woman charged with 'terroristic threat' against school over Jewish students

The campaign of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., condemned "appalling" antisemitic remarks of a woman arrested for allegedly making threats against a Brooklyn public high school attended by Jewish students, and denied a report that the suspect once worked for them.

Iman Abdul, 27, of Brooklyn, was arrested Friday on charges of making a terroristic threat, endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated harassment and making a threat of mass harm, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital.

The NYPD said it was reported to police on Thursday afternoon that Abdul "made a terroristic threat through social media" towards the Leon Goldstein High School for the Sciences, located in Manhattan Beach, within the confines of the 61st Precinct.

CUOMO SUPPORTERS LOOK TO WEALTHY ENCLAVE TO TAKE DOWN MAMDANI: REPORT

The New York Post was first to report on the case. The outlet obtained screenshots of posts purportedly shared from Abdul’s since-deactivated Instagram account.

"If anyone needs a public school in NYC to attack for whatever reason… Lexus driving Israhell [sic] loving Zionisits [sic] all attend here," Abdul allegedly wrote, sharing a screenshot from Google Maps of the high school's location.

The group Stop Antisemitism and Jewish advocate Uri Cohen both posted Abdul’s photo and a screenshot of the post to X, demanding that she be prosecuted over the threats.

Online court records show Abdul was arraigned on one count of making a terroristic threat and one count of making a threat of mass harm, pleading not guilty.

"A map. A pin. A call to harm Jews, fellow New Yorkers, children, teachers. This isn’t just dangerous. It’s evil. Jew-hatred doesn’t stop with a threat. It escalates. We need immediate and unequivocal action," Tova Plaut, a Department of Education pre-K staffer and Jewish activist, reportedly told The Post. "I am outraged and horrified that a NYC school was publicly marked for attack simply because of its Jewish population."

MAMDANI'S FORMER INTERN CALLED ACTIVISM 'JIHAD' AND CONFRONTED POLICE OFFICERS AS 'PIGS'

In a direct message to Stop Antisemitism, Abdul reportedly defended the post before her account was deactivated.

"I never called for an attack on the school in the sense of mass organization or not even individual people attacking individuals, that’s literally stupid," she wrote, according to the Post. "I called for an attack on the school, the Zionist institution funded by our public dollars … we have every right to verbally attack the school."

Fox News Digital reached out to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office seeking more information on Sunday but did not immediately hear back.

The Post was also first to identify Abdul’s connection to Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign. According to the outlet, Abdul worked on the "Squad" member’s Democratic primary campaign as a youth organizer in the summer of 2018. State Sen. Julia Salazar reportedly told the Post that Abdul also worked on Salazar's campaign during that timeframe as a paid canvasser.

Ocasio-Cortez's campaign office denied that Abdul was ever a campaign staffer.

"This person was never staff on the campaign and any representation of such is false," the campaign said in a statement. "Their comments are appalling and we condemn threats of violence without hesitation."

Reached by Fox News Digital, Abdul's attorney, Geoffrey St. Andrew Stewart, declined to comment on the case.

Shooter named in CDC headquarters attack that left Georgia police officer dead

The man suspected of gunning down a police officer near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday has been named as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White.

White, 30, of Kennesaw, Georgia, is suspected of killing DeKalb County Police Department Officer David Rose, 33, shortly before 5 p.m., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said in an update on Saturday.

The deadly incident unfolded when White opened fire in front of the CDC campus, unleashing a barrage of bullets that pierced multiple windows.

A GBI image released Saturday showed dozens of shell casings scattered across the pavement.

POLICE OFFICER KILLED AFTER SHOOTING NEAR CDC HEADQUARTERS, EMORY UNIVERSITY IN ATLANTA

At least four CDC buildings were hit, Director Susan Monarez said in a post on X. Images shared by employees showed multiple agency buildings with bullet-pocked windows, underscoring the breadth of the damage to a site where thousands of scientists and staff work on critical disease research.

When officers responded to the location, they found Rose critically wounded and heard additional gunfire coming from a nearby CVS pharmacy. Rose was rushed to Emory University Hospital on Clifton Road where he died from his injuries.

Officers entered a nearby pharmacy and located the shooter on the second floor with at least one gunshot wound. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said it was not clear if the wound came from police gunfire or if it was self-inflicted.

The motive for the shooting is not known.

Without naming White Friday night, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens described him as a "known person that may have, some interest in certain things."

The shooting took place on Clifton Rd. near the Emory University campus, which also houses a daycare with more than 90 children in its care. None of them were harmed.

SHOOTING AT GEORGIA'S FORT STEWART INJURES 5 SOLDIERS; SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

The GBI is now leading the investigation and the FBI's Atlanta office said it is also assisting. The GBI said it is collecting evidence and conducting interviews as part of its investigation, which it said will take "an extended period of time."

Officer Rose joined the DeKalb County Police Department in September 2024, graduated from the police academy in March and had quickly earned a reputation for dedication and professionalism, the department said in a statement. He previously served as a Marine in Afghanistan.

He is survived by his pregnant wife and two children, police said.

Interim Police Chief Greg Padrick said Rose was committed to serving the community.

"At this time we’re asking for the community’s prayers for his family, his friends, his loved ones and the entire DeKalb County Police Department family," he said in a statement Friday.

Republican Gov. Brian Kemp said his family is "mourning today's tragic loss of Officer David Rose."

"His service and memory will not be forgotten by a grateful state, and his loved ones and fellow @DeKalbCountyPD officers will remain in our hearts and prayers as they grieve his passing and this painful day," Kemp wrote on X.

Rock star Rick Springfield says the world has enough kids - and Bill Maher agrees

Rick Springfield, known for his 1980s hit "Jessie's Girl," says that the world doesn’t need any more kids, and Bill Maher agrees with him.

"I am really falling behind in this reproductive competition," Maher said on his Monday episode of his podcast, "Club Random," with Springfield.

"I don't know, we don't need more," Springfield said. "We don't need more."

MAHER CALLS OUT SNL FOR 'ZOMBIE LIE' THAT REPUBLICANS ARE RACIST, WARNS THEY ARE 'NOT HELPING'

"I think that and yet there's a big movement out there, Elon Musk, many other people talk about we have to have more babies," Maher said. "This is like a thing."

But Springfield was dismissive.

"Everyone else is taking care of that there," Springfield said.

"But I think they're wrong," Maher said. "I think we already have too many."

Springfield, whose son recently had a baby, agreed, saying "I think we have way too many."

BILL MAHER TELLS AMERICANS TO STOP PRETENDING THEY HAVE 'CORE CONVICTIONS' AND 'DEEPLY HELD BELIEFS'

He added that the "earth can’t" handle an increase in population.

"And their argument is stupid," Maher said in agreement. "Their argument is there's plenty of room. Yeah. There's plenty of room. There's not plenty of resources."

"No," Springfield agreed.

"We can fit them here, we just can't feed them and take care of all their s--t," Maher said.

recent report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the birth rate in America has dropped to a historic low, falling by 3% since 2022.

The rate has steadily declined since 2014, except for a 1% increase from 2020 to 2021.

Priorities of young Americans have shifted, likely contributing to the falling birthrate, such as decreased interest in having children and greater focus on career.

Mamdani studies 'America's Worst Mayor' Brandon Johnson to avoid his political pitfalls: report

New York Assemb. Zohran Mamdani’s campaign is studying another far-left figure’s rapid rise in city politics – not to emulate it, but to avoid the missteps that earned him the "America’s Worst Mayor" moniker, according to a new report.

Mamdani, D-Astoria, has a lot of parallels with Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. While Johnson is not an explicit member of the Democratic Socialists of America, as Mamdani is – according to the group’s New York chapter – the two exude similar progressive politics.

But, Johnson – despite holding office in a city without a single Republican alderman – has earned reported single-digit approval numbers, following his rise from teachers' union organizer and Cook County legislator to the Windy City’s mayorship.

Those snafus are something Mamdani’s campaign wants to avoid, according to NBC News.

CHICAGO MAYOR CALLS ICE RAIDS ‘TERRORISM,’ SAYS TRUMP'S AMERICA APPEARS AS IF ‘THE CONFEDERACY WON’

NBC News cited a source close to both Democrats’ camps, who said Mamdani is "tracking Johnson’s challenges" and instead hopes to be more like another progressive with a less nationally-infamous track record: Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

The source told NBC News Johnson "lost the plot" and suggested Mamdani is more "pragmatic" than the firebrand Chicagoan.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Tribune editorial board has warned New York City voters against selecting Mamdani, writing they've "seen this movie before and the ending isn't pretty" – referring to Johnson.

Johnson has repeatedly clashed with reporters at press conferences, branded ICE officers as agents of "terrorism," and characterized President Donald Trump as a neoconfederate dictator.

When Trump called Mamdani a communist, he responded that he is getting used to having Trump criticize him.

CHICAGO MAYOR CALLS DOGE ‘ACT OF WAR,’ COMPARES SECOND TRUMP TERM TO THIRD REICH

He told "Meet the Press" in a more measured response in June that he is a democratic socialist "in many ways inspired by the words of Dr. [Martin Luther] King from decades ago."

In an interview with NY1, Mamdani also highlighted how he is only two years younger than Wu was when she began her own mayoral campaign, contrasting younger Democrats like himself and the Beantown mayor with old guard like Andrew Cuomo.

"I think what we see in our politics is a desire to turn the page on the failed leadership that delivered us these crises," he said.

Like Johnson, Mamdani’s rise was similarly sudden.

He emigrated from Uganda at age 7, later had brief stints with MoveOn and other activist groups, was elected assemblyman in 2020 and is now the frontrunner for America’s largest city’s mayorship.

Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa has repeatedly called for Mamdani’s critics to unify behind his Republican candidacy to save New York City, in his words, while Cuomo remains in the race, albeit as an Independent.

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign and Johnson’s office for comment.

Conor McGregor urges Irish citizens to sign petition that would 'ensure' spot on country's presidential ballot

Conor McGregor said back in March that he was running to be Ireland's president – now, he's aiming to make it official.

The UFC superstar posted a link to a petition to social media Monday that would "ensure" he is on the ballot.

"I, Conor McGregor hereby declare my intention to seek the esteemed office of President of Ireland," McGregor wrote in the petition

"The current constitutional framework however presents a significant barrier to democratic participation. The existing regulations mandate that a candidate must secure nominations from either twenty members of the Oireachtas or four county councils to be eligible for the ballot. This system, while intended to ensure a degree of political influence among candidates, inadvertently restricts the direct voice of the Irish electorate.

"In light of this, I propose a petition advocating for a modification of the nomination process to allow my name be included on the ballot. I contend that the citizens of Ireland, both at home and abroad, should have the unhindered right to determine the candidates who appear on the presidential ballot. Therefore, I implore you to join me in this endeavor by signing this petition. Your support will be instrumental in championing a more inclusive and democratic electoral process, thereby empowering the people of Ireland to shape their own future."

UFC'S DANA WHITE REMEMBERS HULK HOGAN AFTER WWE ICON'S DEATH

McGregor's initial announcement about running for president came just days after he met President Donald Trump earlier this year.

The former champ has opposed a bill regarding the EU Migration Pact.

"Ireland must fully implement the EU Migration Pact by June 12, 2026. So between now and 12 June 2026, several pieces of legislation have to be passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas & then signed by the President… Who else will stand up to Government and oppose this bill?… I will!" McGregor wrote in March.

"It is the people of Irelands choice! Always! That is a true democracy!.. This is the future of Ireland with me as President. All citizens of Ireland to have a voice and a choice on their future! God bless our people. Vote McGregor and have your voice heard!"

McGregor criticized the Irish government at the White House in an attempt to raise awareness of "the issues the people of Ireland face."

In September, he teased a potential presidential run in Ireland, calling himself the "only logical choice."

McGregor has not fought since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021. He was supposed to return last year, but a toe injury kept him out of the octagon. He has since said he would only return in a stadium, but showed interest in the UFC event at the White House next year.

Montana manhunt expands for ex-soldier suspect seen with stolen survival gear after bar massacre

Montana authorities are expanding a rugged, multi-agency manhunt for a former soldier accused of gunning down four people at a local bar, warning the suspect may be armed with camping gear and survival supplies stolen from a second vehicle.

The Montana Department of Justice revealed Sunday that Michael Paul Brown, 45, fled the Owl Bar shooting Friday night shirtless and barefoot, only to later be seen near a stolen white Ford F-150 loaded with clothing, food and outdoor gear.

"We know Michael Paul Brown was shirtless and barefoot when he fled…," Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said on Sunday. "We have very good reason to believe that he is clothed now and possibly carrying camping gear. He is probably able to get around undetected."

Brown remained at large as of Monday, with the manhunt carrying on over the weekend.

VICTIMS OF MONTANA BAR SHOOTING IDENTIFIED AS MANHUNT FOR MILITARY VETERAN SUSPECT CONTINUES

Authorities said that the manhunt for Brown has expanded, with hundreds of local, state and federal officers, including the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, ATF, FBI, U.S. Marshals and local county agencies. Fox News Digital has reached out to the lead agency in the manhunt, the Montana Department of Justice, for comment.

Brown was last seen in "Stump Town," which lies just west of the town of Anaconda, Montana, which is in southwestern Montana. Authorities said that the terrain is steep, remote and heavily wooded.

"They’re dealing with extremely rugged terrain," Knudsen said. "Local law enforcement is stretched thin right now."

GUNMAN SHOOTS MULTIPLE PEOPLE AT MONTANA BUSINESS, AUTHORITIES LAUNCH INTENSIVE MANHUNT

The four victims, 64-year-old Nancy Lauretta Kelley, 59-year-old Daniel Edwin Baillie, 70-year-old David Allen Leach and 74-year-old Tony Wayne Palm, were locals known in the small town of Anaconda, which has a population of approximately 9,000. Kelley was a bartender at the local establishment, with the three other victims patrons, authorities said.

Brown, authorities revealed, lived next door to the bar.

"Everybody knows everybody in a town like this," one resident told The Associated Press

Brown’s niece, Clare Boyle, said that her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years, and she and other family members repeatedly sought help.

"This isn’t just a drunk/high man going wild," she said in a Facebook message to the AP. "It’s a sick man who doesn’t know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn’t know where or when he is either."

The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a reward of $7,500 for any information that leads to the arrest or capture of Brown. Residents are encouraged to call 1-877-926-8332 to report a tip.

Residents in the area have been told to stay inside their homes and remain on high alert. He has been described as 5-foot, 10-inches and about 170 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair.

The state's attorney general told residents to not approach the armed and dangerous murder suspect, saying, "This is an unstable individual who walked in and murdered four people in cold blood for no reason whatsoever."

Brown was an armor crewman in the Army from January 2001 to May 2005 and served in the National Guard from April 2006 to March 2008, Army Public Affairs confirmed to Fox News Digital. He deployed to Iraq from February 2004 to March 2005 and left the service with the rank of sergeant.

He also served as an armor crewman in the Montana National Guard from April 2006 to March 2009, officials said.

Major business group intervenes to blunt Newsom lawsuit attempting to reinstate EV mandates

EXCLUSIVE: A major pro-business group will intervene Monday on the side of the federal government as California leads several other states in trying to undo Congress’ rescission of several electric vehicle (EV) mandates.

The American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce (AmFree) – a pro-limited-government alternative to the older U.S. Chamber of Commerce – will file suit in Oakland federal court to intervene in California’s challenge to three bipartisan Congressional Review Act resolutions signed by President Donald Trump that blocked the Golden State from enforcing what AmFree calls "radical" and commercially damaging EV mandates.

AmFree and several agricultural and trade organizations backing its intervention said they intend to help make the case that California and the other blue states it is leading as plaintiffs against the government remain preempted from enforcing the mandates and that the mooted restrictions were stifling American commerce.

"[The] entire complaint should be dismissed with prejudice," AmFree wrote in its filing, as the Congressional Review Act (CRA) itself – the tool that Congress used to block the mandates – shields any aspect of the situation from a judicial review.

CA DROPS ‘GREEN’ BIG-RIG MANDATES, ENDING LEGAL FIGHT WITH BILL BARR-LINKED GROUP

Therefore, AmFree argues, California lacks standing and courts have no constitutional authority to interfere with internal congressional processes like CRA.

Congress properly used its power to invalidate the Biden-era waivers granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to California, they argue.

"President Trump and members of Congress deserve tremendous credit for putting California’s EV mandates on the trash heap where they belong," said AmFree CEO Gentry Collins. "If allowed to move forward, these onerous regulations would have been catastrophic for the U.S. economy.

"Just because Governor Newsom doesn’t like the outcome doesn’t mean he can weaponize the courts to subvert the will of elected representatives who answer to voters."

Michael Buschbacher, the lead attorney in the case and a partner at Boyden Gray, told Fox News Digital in a Monday interview that the law is clear when it comes to challenging CRAs like those passed to blunt the EV mandates.

DOZENS OF STATES LOBBY EPA TO DENY CALIFORNIA WAIVER FORCING OUT-OF-STATE STRUCKS TO COMPLY WITH GREEN MANDATE

"Congress said that there's no judicial review for CRA resolutions. So that alone should end things, and then, when you think about what they're doing, they’re trying to undo a law – as best I can tell, their theory is they’re constitutionally entitled to the filibuster, but the filibuster’s not in the Constitution and I don’t see any viable legal arguments that they have," Buschbacher said.

"That’s why, along with our motion to intervene, we’re including a motion to dismiss… with prejudice."

He also noted that because lawsuits against the government often drag on through multiple presidential administrations, having AmFree and its trade association partners as intervenors helps prevent "collusive settlements" — which can happen when new officeholders bring shifting priorities or legal interpretations.

When asked about the case under the lens of ongoing debates on federal judicial activism and overreach, Buschbacher added that the blue-state plaintiffs are "definitely trying to get the judiciary to step way out of line into second-guessing the core parts of the institutional prerogatives of the House and Senate."

"I'm not aware of any lawsuit that has tried to go this far [regarding] the separation of powers.

"It's clear this is not one of those issues that is like ‘the Trump administration doing something completely novel’ and ‘courts having to wrestle with that’. This is like squarely, ‘Congress passed the law. You can't undo that law unless it's unconstitutional and there's nothing unconstitutional here’."

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and California Attorney General Robert Bonta defended the merits of their suit, claiming EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and the Trump administration defied "decades of precedent" by approving Congress’ CRAs.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

"Trump’s all-out assault on California continues – and this time he’s destroying our clean air and America’s global competitiveness in the process. We are suing to stop this latest illegal action by a President who is a wholly-owned subsidiary of big polluters," Newsom said in a statement.

Newsom and Bonta argued in a June statement when filing the suit that it was actually Republican icon then-Gov. Ronald Reagan who first accelerated California’s clean-air efforts when he sought waivers from then-President Richard Nixon.

"[Trump’s] reckless, politically motivated, and illegal attacks on California continue, this time with his attempt to trample on our longstanding authority to maintain more stringent clean vehicle standards," Bonta said.

"The President is busy playing partisan games with lives on the line and yanking away good jobs that would bolster the economy – ignoring that these actions have life or death consequences for California communities breathing dirty, toxic air. I’ve said it before.

"I’ll say it again: California will not back down," Bonta said.

Several blue states, including Pennsylvania, remain tied to some of California’s EV mandates, with the owner of a Lenhartsville trucking company warning journalist John Stossel in a recent interview that without breaking from the Golden State, the industry would have problems.

Virginia is one state that was able to break with California. As Buschbacher said, Richmond found a technicality in their own statute – where it assumed California was going to enshrine its EV mandate in one statutory subsection versus another in the state code. That helped Virginia back out of the pact previously approved by former Gov. Ralph Northam.

Dr. Oz touts investment in Medicaid: 'I'm trying to save this beautiful program'

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz says the Trump administration plans to invest more than $200 billion "more dollars" into Medicaid following the passage of the "One Big Beautiful Bill."

"I'm trying to save this beautiful program, this noble effort, to help folks, giving them a hand up," Oz told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

"And as you probably gather, if Medicaid isn't able to take care of the people for whom it was designed, the young children, the dawn of their life, those who are twilight of their lives, the seniors, and those who were disabled living in the shadows, as Hubert Humphrey said, then we're not satisfying the fundamental obligation of a moral government," he continued.

Oz, the 17th administrator for CMS, said the government wants "an appropriate return" on the Medicaid investment. He addressed the difference in drug costs between the U.S. and Europe, adding that work is being done by the administration in an attempt to bring drug prices down.

TRUMP TO UNVEIL NEW MAHA INITIATIVES AT 'MAKE HEALTH TECH GREAT AGAIN' WHITE HOUSE EVENT

Last week, the Trump administration announced it is launching a new program that will allow Americans to share personal health data and medical records across health systems and apps run by private tech companies, promising that this will make it easier to access health records and monitor wellness.

CMS will be in charge of maintaining the system, and officials have said patients will need to opt in for the sharing of their medical records and data, which will be kept secure.

TOP TRUMP HEALTH OFFICIAL SLAMS DEMOCRATS FOR 'MISLEADING' CLAIMS ABOUT MEDICAID REFORM

Those officials said patients will benefit from a system that lets them quickly call up their own records without the hallmark difficulties, such as requiring the use of fax machines to share documents, that have prevented them from doing so in the past.

"We're going to have remarkable advances in how consumers can use their own records," Oz said during the White House event.

CMS already has troves of information on more than 140 million Americans who enroll in Medicare and Medicaid. Earlier this month, the federal agency agreed to hand over its massive database, including home addresses, to deportation officials.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
